The Importance of Applying Feng Shui in Homes and Commercial Spaces

Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese art of harmonizing energies within a space, is far more than just arranging furniture or choosing the right color palette. It’s a practice deeply rooted in the belief that our surroundings significantly influence our lives, from our health and happiness to our prosperity and success. Whether in a cozy home or a bustling commercial space, applying Feng Shui principles can lead to profound transformations, creating environments that support and nurture our aspirations.

Creating Harmony and Balance

At its core, Feng Shui is about balance. It’s the art of aligning the energy, or Chi, within a space to create a harmonious environment. In homes, this balance promotes peace, well-being, and strong relationships. When the energy in a home flows smoothly, it reflects positively on the occupants, encouraging tranquility and reducing stress. This balance is equally crucial in commercial spaces, where the flow of energy can directly impact productivity, employee morale, and customer satisfaction.

Enhancing Prosperity and Success

Feng Shui is often associated with prosperity, and for good reason. By carefully arranging spaces according to Feng Shui principles, we can enhance the flow of wealth and energy. In homes, this might mean creating a welcoming entryway or a clutter-free environment, which invites positive energy and opportunities. In commercial spaces, strategic placement of key elements can attract more business, improve financial performance, and foster a positive reputation.

For instance, the location of a desk in a business office can influence decision-making and leadership qualities. A desk positioned with a clear view of the entrance and a solid wall behind it provides a sense of security and control, boosting confidence and authority. Similarly, the placement of plants, water features, and mirrors can attract energy and enhance the overall ambiance of the space.

Promoting Health and Well-being

In both homes and commercial environments, the quality of energy can impact health. Feng Shui encourages the use of natural light, fresh air, and the incorporation of nature to create spaces that promote vitality and well-being. In a home setting, this might involve positioning the bed for optimal rest, using soothing colors in the bedroom, or incorporating elements that reduce electromagnetic fields.

In commercial spaces, promoting health might mean ensuring that workspaces are free of clutter and have good ventilation, or arranging furniture to prevent stagnant energy, which can lead to fatigue or a lack of motivation. By fostering a healthy environment, Feng Shui helps to maintain the physical and mental well-being of those who live and work in these spaces.

Supporting Relationships and Communication

The layout and design of a space can significantly influence the quality of relationships and communication. In homes, Feng Shui principles can help create environments that support loving and harmonious relationships. For example, the use of pairs of objects in the bedroom can symbolize partnership, attract love or enhance an existing relationship.

In commercial spaces, the arrangement of meeting rooms, the placement of seating, and even the choice of colors can encourage open communication, collaboration, and teamwork. A well-designed space can foster a sense of community and belonging, whether it’s within a family home or a corporate office.

Encouraging Creativity and Innovation

Feng Shui also plays a vital role in sparking creativity and innovation. In homes, creating a space that inspires can be as simple as incorporating elements that stimulate the senses, such as art, colors, and textures. In commercial spaces, the design can encourage out-of-the-box thinking, especially in industries that rely on creativity and innovation.

For instance, a workspace that allows for movement, with spaces for brainstorming and relaxation, can help employees think more freely and come up with innovative solutions. By applying Feng Shui, businesses can create environments that nurture the creative potential of their teams, leading to more innovative ideas and solutions.

Final Thoughts: Embrace the Power of Feng Shui

Incorporating Feng Shui into homes and commercial spaces is more than just a design choice; it’s a way to create environments that truly support our lives and goals. By understanding and applying the principles of Feng Shui, we can harness the energy of our surroundings to enhance well-being, prosperity, and success.

Whether you’re looking to create a peaceful home, boost your business, or simply improve the quality of your life, Feng Shui offers timeless wisdom that can guide you on your journey. The power of Feng Shui lies in its ability to create spaces that resonate with our deepest needs and desires, transforming the energy around us into a source of positive change.

Unlocking Harmony: My Feng Shui Consultation with the Compass School

Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt a sense of calm or discomfort? The ancient art of Feng Shui can help explain these sensations and guide us in creating spaces that promote harmony and well-being. Recently, I had the opportunity to experience a Feng Shui consultation using the Compass School method, and I’m excited to share my journey with you.

What is the Compass School?

Feng Shui, which translates to “wind-water,” is a traditional Chinese practice that focuses on harmonizing individuals with their surrounding environment. The Compass School, one of the two main schools of Feng Shui, utilizes the eight cardinal directions—north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west, and northwest—to assess and optimize the flow of energy (qi) within a space. By taking precise compass readings, a Feng Shui practitioner can provide insights into how these directions influence different areas of our lives, such as health, wealth, relationships, and careers.

The Consultation Experience

With over 10 years of experience in Feng Shui consultations, I, Vi Torretto, approach each client with a personalized touch. As a Feng Shui specialist, Reiki Master, Access Bars facilitator, and Radionics specialist, I integrate a holistic perspective into my practice. Here’s how my recent consultation unfolded:

1. Preparation

Before the consultation, I gathered floor plans of my home and a basic understanding of the areas I wanted to improve. My consult

Then she asked me to identify specific goals, such as enhancing my career prospects, improving family relationships, or creating a more relaxing environment.

2. The Compass Reading

The consultation began with the practitioner using a Luo Pan, a traditional Feng Shui compass, to take accurate readings of my home’s main entrance and other key points. This process was fascinating to observe, as the Luo Pan is an intricate tool filled with rings of information

ions that help the practitioner interpret the energy flow.

3. Analyzing the Directions.

With the compass readings in hand, the consultant created a Bagua map, an octagonal grid that divides the space into nine sectors, each associated with a different aspect of life. Here’s a brief overview of what each direction represents:

  • North: Career and life path
  • Northeast: Knowledge and self-cultivation
  • East: Family and health
  • Southeast: Wealth and prosperity
  • South: Fame and reputation
  • Southwest: Love and marriage
  • West: Creativity and children
  • Northwest: Helpful people and travel

The center of the Bagua map, representing overall health and balance, is crucial for maintaining harmony in all areas.

4. Implementing Changes

Based on the analysis, the consultant provided personalized recommendations for each sector of my home:

  • North (Career): I was advised to place a water feature, such as a small fountain or an aquarium, near the entrance to enhance career opportunities.
  • Northeast (Knowledge): A bookshelf filled with my favorite books and a meditation corner were suggested to stimulate personal growth.
  • East (Family): Adding vibrant, healthy plants in the living room would promote family harmony and well-being.
  • Southeast (Wealth): Placing a bowl of coins or a wealth vase in the southeast corner of my home office could attract financial prosperity.
  • South (Fame): Hanging artwork or awards on the south wall would enhance my reputation and recognition.
  • Southwest (Love): Incorporating pairs of objects, like two candles or two pillows, in the bedroom would strengthen my romantic relationship.
  • West (Creativity): Creating a dedicated space for creative projects, with art supplies and inspirational decor, would foster creativity.
  • Northwest (Helpful People): Displaying a map with pins marking places I’d like to visit would attract travel opportunities and supportive connections.

The Results

Implementing these changes was a gradual process, but I quickly noticed a shift in the energy of my home. My workspace felt more inspiring, family gatherings became more harmonious, and I even received unexpected support from helpful people. The consultation provided me with a deeper understanding of how my environment impacts my life and empowered me to make positive changes.

Conclusion

The Compass School method of Feng Shui offers a practical and insightful approach to creating a balanced and harmonious living space. By aligning your environment with the natural flow of energy, you can enhance various aspects of your life and achieve a greater sense of well-being. With over a decade of experience and a commitment to providing personalized reports, I, Vi Torretto, am here to help you transform your home into a sanctuary of peace and prosperity. If you’re curious about Feng Shui, I highly recommend experiencing a Compass School consultation for yourself. It’s an investment in your home and your life that can lead to lasting positive change.

Sage belongs to the Salvia plant family and is derived from the Latin word salvere, which means “to heal.”

Intentions are central to the practice of smudging, so take a moment before you light the sage to determine what exactly it is that you’re trying to purify or release from your space.

Cleanse the energy in your home with White Sage Stick! Sage has been used by many cultures for thousands of years for cleansing, and purification of both individuals and spaces through ritual burning. Common reasons for burning White Sage are to clear energy, restore balance, spiritual purification, and protection.

DIRECTIONS:
1. Open a few windows or doors to help any smoke leave easily.
2. Light your sage stick over a flame-resistant bowl until you reach a small flame.
3. Once you have a small flame, hold your sage stick over the flame-resistant bowl and blow gently on the flame until it goes out.
4. The sage will then begin to smoke gently like incense and you may begin to smudge the desired area or individual.

Hold the sage at a 45-degree angl. Then you can start the process of clearing your space starting from your front door in clockwise direction.

You can say something like this as your intention:

Love: I open this space to divine love, may all the energy that flows through here benefit the heart space. May it hold compassion, nurturance, forgiveness, and truth.

Abundance: I call in the divine abundance of creativity [or inspiration, productivity, etc.]. May the [project, artwork, contract, etc.] I feel within my heart come to fruition in a form that benefits my highest good. May it be manifested into the form that best expresses its truth.

Negative Energy: I command any negativity, any low vibrational energy, and nonbenevolent beings within this space to leave and go to the light. You are not welcome here. I command you to leave and go to the light.

Make sure you finish at the front door where you stared. Be grateful for all the energy that moved out.

Now you can use some fresh flowers and plants to keep the energy. Enjoy your place 🙂

A wealth vase is an ancient Chinese amulet that was used to bring wealth and prosperity to Chinese families from the time immemorial. Back then, only the wealthiest people could afford to make such a talisman.

Create a Feng Shui Wealth Vase to Stimulate Wealth Luck

The feng shui wealth vase is an ancient secret for accumulating wealth. You can use it to improve your personal wealth luck.  it is important to fill the vase with your clear intent for wealth which helps energize the vase.

Size of Wealth Vase

You can choose any size of a wealth vase you want. Keep in mind that ancient emperors used huge floor vases as well as more discreet ones to attract and protect their wealth. Feng shui rules advise you to hide the wealth vase once it’s complete, although if you are comfortable having your wealth showcased, you can display, you just need to do this with intention, the size and color your decide, this is your vase.

Select Type of Wealth Vase

The type of wealth vase you use is important. You need a vase that has a base that is wider than its top. The classic ginger jar is the preferred choice since it has a wide opening, but the neck is narrow and comes with a lid. A regular vase doesn’t have the lid and although you can use it, your wealth vase will be far more secure with a lid.

Five Essential Wealth Vase Ingredients

There are three essential wealth vase ingredients you will need to infuse it with the powerful money magnet energy that it’s famous for bestowing to its creator/owner. These ingredients include soil, symbols of wealth, foodstuff, colored cloths, and ribbons.

1. Soil From Rich Person’s Yard

The soil you will add to your wealth vase needs to be from the yard of a wealthy person. The soil must be given to you freely by the wealthy person. If you steal the soil without the owner’s knowledge or permission, it won’t work its magic for you.

Substitute for Wealthy Person’s Soil

If you can’t get soil from a wealthy person, then you can substitute with a different soil. You will need rich fertile soil from an area that is thriving and flourishing with vibrant plant life and energy. You can also use a Picture of  a wealthy person.

2. Symbols and Items of Wealth and Prosperity

You want to choose symbols and different items to represent the whealth and prosperity you wish to attract to you. You can choose from traditional Feng Shui items. You can also choose to include things that are your ideal symbols of wealth. Most people opt to have a mixture of traditional feng shui items and personal ones. Since it is your wealth vase, the choices are up to you. Some of the traditional feng shui ingredients to include in your vase include:

  • Crystal chips in an assortment to represent earthly wealth (red and Gold Crystals are some examples)
  • Currency from different countries
  • Faux diamonds and gemstones
  • Five miniature globes of different colors
  • Gold bars and gold ingots (Real are best, but certainly faux can be used as symbols.)
  • Gold flakes for real gold element or pieces of gold jewelry
  • I Ching coins
  • One of the gods of wealth (Caishen)
  • Picture/photos of house, car, yacht, clothes, and material items you deem as status symbols of wealth
  • Photos of wealthy people you find inspiring
  • Semi-precious gemstones
  • Six mini-crystal balls, smooth finish for harmony
  • Three Chinese brass coins from auspicious dynasty tied together with red string or ribbon

3. Cash From a Rich Person

You need to include cash from a rich person in your wealth vase. The easiest way to get this currency is to ask if the person can give you change for a larger bill. This allows you to swap the money in a fair exchange.

4. Feng Shui Tradition of Adding Food to Wealth Vases

The practice of placing rice and other grains in the wealth vase is an ancient feng shui tradition for imbuing wealth energy into the food. The grains were annually replaced with fresh grains and the wealth infused grains consumed over the course of the following year. Use 5 differents grains, it’s best to place in sealable bags.

5. Five Pieces of Colored Square Cloth and Ribbons

You will need five squares of colored fabric cloth and matching colored ribbons. Each of the Five colors represent the five elements. The colors you need are blue, green, yellow, red, and white

.

Cleanse Your Feng Shui Wealth Vase Before Filling It

You will need to cleanse your feng shui wealth vase before placing anything in it. You can use a sandalwood incense cone or an incense stick placed in an incense holder.

  1. Set the incens or sage holder on a table.
  2. Light the incense or sage and place in the holder.
  3. Turn the vase upside down and hold the opening over the incense or sage.
  4. Fill the vase with smoke from the incense or sage to clear out any stagnant chi energy.
  5. Once you feel that the incense/sage  has cleared out the stagnant chi energy in the vase, turn the vase upright and set down on the table.
  6. Hold the vase lid over the burning incense /sage to clear any stagnant chi energy tramped in it.
  7. Once you’re satisfied that stagnant energy in your wealth vase has been cleared, you can either let the incense continue to burn or snuff it off.

How to Assemble the Ingredients in Your Wealth Vase

Once you’ve cleansed the wealth vase with incense or sage, you’re ready to begin assembling your wealth vase. You will assemble the ingredients in your wealth vase with deliberate intent. You want to have a sense of respect for each item you add into the vase.

  1. Hold the neck of the vase between your hands and focus your energy on the inside of the vase.
  2. Meditate on your intentions for creating your feng shui wealth vase and envision filling the vase with your desires, hopes, wishes, plans, and goals.
  3. Once you’re satisfied you’ve imbued your energy inside the vase, you can begin filling it.
  4. Place the soil/dirt collected from a rich person’s yard or other fertile soil in the bottom of your feng shui wealth vase. This soil becomes the foundation for your wealth building.
  5. If you’ve chosen to use grains, place inside your vase.
  6. Add the money and coins, gold bars and ingots, followed by the gemstones.
  7. Place god of wealth in the center of your vase, facing out (make sure you know where he is by making a tiny mark, piece of tape on the outside or bottom of the vase).
  8. Carefully, place the remaining items into the vase until it is three-fourths full to leave room for wealth to grow.

Sealing Your Wealth Vase

Once your wealth vase is completely full, you need to place the lid on it. You’re now ready to add the five pieces of colored cloth and tie it the five colored ribbons to hold them in place.

  • Place the blue square of fabric over the lid.
  • In precise order, add the green, red, yellow, and white fabrics. You should end up with the white piece of fabric on top of the other cloths.
  • Tie the five colored ribbons around the vase neck to hold the fabrics in place.

Where to Place Your Feng Shui Wealth Vase

There are several places you can store your wealth vase. The main thing you want is a place where no one will disturb it or accidentally overturn it. Always place your feng shui wealth vase of wealth facing into a room, never facing out of a room, door, or window.

  • One good location for a wealth vase is your bedroom inside an armoire or cabinet with the god of wealth facing into the room.
  • Some people prefer to put their wealth vase on display.
  • You can place your feng shui wealth vase in the southeast sector of your home.
  • Your personal wealth sector according to your Kua number is another great location.

Annual Additions to Your Feng Shui Wealth Vase

Each year on the anniversary of your wealth vase creation, you will add one or two pieces of gold. This symbolizes that you are adding to your wealth by accumulating gold.

  1. Remove the ribbons and cloths.
  2. Open the lid to add real gold or faux ingots.
  3. You can also add coins or paper money along with the gold.
  4. Replace the cloths in the correct order.
  5. Retie the ribbons and set the vase back in its storage or display place.

A Feng Shui Home Office is a positive and productive place to work. But contrary to popular belief, Feng Shui isn’t a way to decorate or a Chinese style of decor. Both a science and an art, Feng Shui is all about energy and attraction. The purpose is to create a space that triggers specific emotions and feelings.

Feng Shui is especially important for a home office because unlike a corporate space, you have complete control over how it’s designed, what furniture is used, and the layout of the room. There isn’t just one way to feng shui an office; it depends on the person and their professional goals, as well as what the room is being used for. Feng Shui can increase business by drawing in more clients, creating happier employees, and generating more wealth.

A Feng Shui office can be the key to a highly productive day, a more successful career, and ultimately, a better life. Here are some expert tips for creating a feng shui home office.

1 – The desk should face where you can see who is coming and going from the room. This is a power position and it equals major success. Your back facing the door creates vulnerability and anxiety.

But not all office layouts allow for the ideal position of the desk. If you have no choice but to have your back facing the door, hanging a mirror in front of your workspace so you can see who is entering and exiting the door. Ideally, your back will be facing a wall (not a window or other furniture like a bookcase).

The single most important piece of furniture in any home office is the desk. Making sure your desk is sturdy above all else (so avoid a leaning desk, for example). Whatever style of furniture you choose, make sure the desk is in good repair, the legs are even, and there is absolutely no wobbling.

Wood desks are ideal because it’s a natural material that is also sturdy.  It features two drawers for storage so the surface can stay neat with any clutter tucked away .White,  may be a better color for those who need to stimulate creativity or work in creative fields.

Color are very important Feng Shui especially in a room like an office. The colors you choose should really depend on what kind of work you are doing and the compass reading.. For example, the colors an accountant would likely choose for feng shui probably wouldn’t be as conducive to productivity as they would be for a graphic designer.

White or pastels help stimulate creativity, green represents growth, black represents the water element and is associated with money, while purple represents clarity. But if you feel stressed, go with earth tones.

4 – Don’t forget plants:

The Pilea Peperomioides  plant, which is also called the Chinese money plant. The round leaves look like little coins and it’s beautiful. It has become quite trendy on Instagram the past few years.

Any plant that has a rounded leaf. A succulent garden potted in a wood trough very good feng shui and makes an ideal desk accessory.

Flowering plants (purple and red) are also good choices,. An orchid fits the bill here.

Lighting is just one way to improve your home office feng shui. A well-lit office is important because working in a dark office can be draining. While an abundance of natural light is ideal, all office spaces need supplementary lighting from lamps. No matter what style lamp you choose, it’s best to avoid fluorescent light bulbs because they zap your energy.

Art is also very important for a feng shui office. Hang art that inspires you, Place images of people you admire and aspire to be like and use positive mantras painted or hanging on the wall.

Feng shui colors can change the environment and vibe of your home, but it’s more than just simply making a space look better aesthetically. Contrary to what many people believe, feng shui isn’t a method or style of decorating. It is both an art and science, the purpose of which is to balance and harmonize, which will ultimately increase your personal energy levels.

Feng shui triggers your subconscious brain to make new choices according to what you want to bring into your life. Whether you seek money, balance, happiness, or a renewed sense of clarity, feng shui will help.

An easy way to feng shui your home or office is to use color. Color has a profound effect on how you behave and on your energy level—it can increase or decrease it. Depending on the color, you can feel relaxed, anxious, tired, wide awake, hungry, and even romantic.

Feng SHui is Energy

All life requires growth, evolution and movement. When we lack these elements in our life, the energy that makes up our lives becomes stunted. Imagine not having enough energy to power a light bulb: it grows dim and burns in a weakened state. When we have overstuffed homes – especially with outdated, unused and unloved items, our lives become weakened too.

But how do you know when it’s clutter and when it’s disorganization?

Clutter is when you have eight spatulas or a closet full of clothes you haven’t worn in years. Disorganization is when you can’t find what you’re looking for. Simply organizing your home with shelving, baskets, boxes, and other organizers will often clean up the disarray. In fact, by using organizing items you can often make more room than if you didn’t use them.

Look at your challenges to find the kind of organizers you need. Is the big mess in the kitchen or the bathroom? Maybe the living room is out of control. You might not be able to find an important bill that needs to be paid because you don’t have a place to put the bills when they come in. No matter what your need is, there are containers of every possible size and description that can help you organize your house where you need it.

Unlike a tornado, clutter doesn’t just happen. It gets that way over time.

Sometimes clutter is so insidious that we don’t even notice it until we’re deluged by it. Hopefully, you’ve learned some things about clutter, like what it is, what to do about it, and how it’s different than disorganization. But, just like any good habit, such as exercise, decluttering isn’t something you do and then it’s done: it’s something you start and then keep doing.

Too often people are bitten by the declutter bug and make one big push to declutter. That’s wonderful and having your clutter cleared in one fell swoop feels incredible and unburdens you. Most of the time, though, clutter is related to a vitamin deficiency. Either someone is frozen in fear and doesn’t do anything about the clutter, usually because they’re just overwhelmed, or they do it once or then forget about it for the next 25 years.

Schedule it

Having a regular routine for decluttering is the single best way to keep it from getting out of hand. Pick a daily time that’s convenient such as every day at four o’clock. Then, spend fifteen or so minutes working at removing clutter (tossing mail, magazines, clearing out the refrigerator). Make it long enough you can accomplish something but not so long that you’ll give up.

Declutter with other activities

Instead of just putting freshly-washed towels away toss out your old tired towels first. Or, while your child is getting ready for bed, take a moment to go through some drawers and remove outgrown or stained clothing. Decluttering as you do other things makes decluttering part of daily living — and that creates a routine.

Make it a habit to be aware

Don’t unload groceries into the refrigerator that’s messy or cluttered with jelly jars with only a teaspoon of jam in them. Instead, quickly go through the fridge and toss old items out and wipe down shelves before restocking, and do the same in the pantry – this is the quality of being present with clutter and your environment. Likewise, if you take a phone message and the pen you’re using doesn’t work, make it a habit to throw it away and not put it back in the holder (and I know you do this!).

Be present

Becoming present means that you are aware where you are. That sounds obvious, but if you’ll start becoming more aware and present wherever you are, you’ll notice that you stop forgetting things and misplacing items and you’ll notice how your home and office stay cleaner and neater more easily.

You’ll also notice that you get more accomplished, you’ll scratch things off your mental and physical to-do lists, you’ll become less patient with people who drain you and you’ll get three very valuable qualities back into your life again. They are initiative, motivation and enthusiasm: the zest of living.

Yes, old, broken, crowded, and too-much stuff can do that to you — rob you of zest for living. Free yourself and become aware of what you have and what you really use or don’t use. Getting rid of useless items will unburden your home, mind and spirit and will open up your life again!

Your goals for decluttering this week:

Become more aware and present wherever you are. If you’re in the bathroom and you see a two-year old bottle of prescription medicine you don’t need, why not throw it out?

Straighten and organize before adding anything. Take time to clean the refrigerator and/or pantry before adding groceries. It might take a little longer the first time, but if you do it for a few minutes before adding groceries, each time will get shorter and your fridge or pantry will be neat and tidy.

Worst first. Instead of handling a small clutter area, tackle the worst area first. Get the tough stuff out of the way and you’ll feel instantly energized. Enlist help if you need it. Ask a friend to help you and keep you strong. Who knows? Once you start really pitching, you might find that you are so ENERGIZED that you don’t WANT to stop!

Clear off counters and floors. To get energy moving in your home and life, clear up all items off the floor and off the tops of dressers and counters.

IF you need help contat us , we have a special crew to help you to organize your home or Office.

Feng shui is the art and science of designing harmonious environments based on the profound Chinese understanding of how people are connected to and affected by their close surroundings.

The principle aim of feng shui is to introduce specific positive changes and adjustments into living and working environments so that they are able to support you better, rather than possibly hindering you. Influences of the physical landscape, space, time and orientation  are all assessed. The core of this evolved ancient practice lies in seeking a wholesome, balanced relationship between yin and yang, qi and five elements, man and nature. Feng means wind. Shui means water.

The Benefits of Feng Shui

Feng shui can be a very effective tool for helping people to create harmonious working and living environments, which can also bring about other changes for the better as a consequence. But it cannot guarantee wealth, health or happiness. It is not magic, so beware of people who make such claims. Some scientific research into feng shui is taking place.

Three Basic Feng Shui Concepts

Qi

The Chinese word Qi expresses a complex natural force generated by a combination of both real and abstract sources, including sunlight, cosmic influences, colour vibrations, the movement and quality of the air around us, the flow of water, the nature of our thoughts and emotions, the form of objects, and so much more., Qi influences how a place feels and how we feel in it, depending on whether it can circulate harmoniously or not.

Yin and Yang

The concept of Yin and Yang is that interconnection and continuous change is the dynamic process of nature, which is the significance expressed by the familiar yin-yang symbol. It is fundamental to Chinese cultural philosophy,. Examples are light and shade, inner and outer, movement and stillness. A balance between yin and yang creates harmony and stability in a place, as the natural equilibrium becomes disrupted whenever there is too much of one or other.

Five Elements (wu xing)

The five elements also known as the five phases or transformations, are water, wood, fire, earth and metal. They are correlated to the eight feng shui trigrams. Each trigram relates to a specific compass direction, colour, shape, season, family member and body part. The five elements can be either physical objects or metaphoric representations, used in various ways to strengthen, support, enhance, weaken, manage or control one another, depending upon their relationship and placement. They are introduced to beneficially influence a living space and to support its occupants.

Feng Shui Bagua

Another tool used in feng shui is called the bagua. The bagua is octagon shaped and is divided into the eight wedges. These wedges represent the main eight compass directions of north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west, and northwest. The compass wedges are called sectors.

  • Each sector rules a specific area of life, such as career, education, health, wealth, fame/recognition, love/relationships, descendants (children), and mentors.
  • Each sector is governed by one of the five elements.
  • Each sector is represented by colors that correlate to the element of that sector.

How the Bagua Is Used

A bagua overlay is placed over your home layout or blueprint according to the compass reading made by the feng shui practitioner. The facing direction of your home is usually the front door.

Compass Directions and the Bagua

The bagua overlay will give you a clear picture of the various sectors (compass directions) of each room in your home. This information helps you determine which elements need to be activated in each room to achieve balance and encourage the chi energy to flow into that area.
